What is Mono?

Infectious mononucleosis, also known as mono, is a viral infection commonly caused by the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), a member of the herpes virus family. EBV is contagious and typically spread by saliva. About 90% of adults have evidence of previous infection. EBV infects epithelial cells and B lymphocytes (white blood cells). The virus will remain in latency within the B cells for the duration of an infected person's life.
